Netflix confirmed on Thursday, October 29, that The Diplomat has been renewed for a fifth season, following the cliffhanger ending of Season 4.

Season 4, which arrived on Netflix on October 15, ended with Ambassador Kate Wyler, played by Keri Russell, resigning from her diplomatic post during a major international meeting.

In the finale, President Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney, is shown taking a hardline stance toward other countries, a moment that pushes Wyler to walk away from her role.

Wyler's resignation is followed by other senior figures stepping down in solidarity, including her husband, Vice President Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell, before the screen cuts to black.

Series creator and showrunner Debora Cahn spoke to Netflix's Tudum about the finale, framing the resignations as a story about what a group can achieve together that an individual cannot. No plot details, casting news, or release date for Season 5 have been revealed yet, and all four existing seasons are currently available to stream on Netflix.
