Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut was hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Saturday afternoon, October 31, his office announced Sunday, November 1. Murphy, 53, began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game and was taken to a local hospital, where doctors discovered he had suffered a stroke.

His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said Murphy was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and was responding well to treatment. "The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery," Herwitt said in a statement.

Murphy had spent recent weeks campaigning for Democratic candidates ahead of Tuesday's midterm elections and had been scheduled to appear Sunday in New Hampshire. He is not on the ballot in Tuesday's election, so the health scare does not directly affect a race, but it removes a prominent Democratic surrogate from the campaign's final stretch.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont and Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz issued statements Sunday wishing Murphy a speedy recovery, joining colleagues from both parties who sent well-wishes after the announcement. Murphy is a prominent voice in his party, particularly on gun safety, and has been a prolific campaign surrogate through the midterm cycle.

His office has not released further medical details, and the situation remains a developing story. The statement's emphasis on a full recovery offered reassurance, but no timetable for his return to Washington was given.
