Marvel Studios has confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on December 18, will be Sir Patrick Stewart's final onscreen performance, ending a 26-year run as Professor Xavier.

The news was reported in a November 1 roundup of world film news, days after Stewart's death at 86 was announced following a brief journey with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia.

From Shakespeare's stage to the bridge of the Enterprise as Captain Jean-Luc Picard — and as Professor X in X-Men — Stewart defined two of the biggest franchises ever.

Doomsday will therefore serve as an unintentional farewell: the last time audiences see the actor who made Professor X one of cinema's most enduring figures.

The same roundup noted other world film news, including Cate Blanchett's Displacement Film Fund shorts screening at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and Jailer 2 closing in on ₹800 crore worldwide.
