A child in rural Lewis County, New York, has died after contracting measles, state and county health departments announced Monday. It is New York's first measles-related death in 30 years, officials said.

Officials did not release the child's age or other identifying details. The death comes during a national measles resurgence that has put public health agencies on alert through 2026, with cases reported across multiple states.

New York had reported 178 measles cases as of October 24, according to state figures cited in the announcement. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a statewide disaster emergency last month in response to the outbreak.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses known, spreading through the air and lingering in a room for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. Health officials say two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97 percent effective at preventing the disease.

State health officials urged families to check vaccination records and contact a health care provider if a child shows fever and rash, especially after exposure to a known case. They said the investigation into the child's illness and any contacts was continuing.
