WASHINGTON — A federal grand jury has declined to indict former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson over her testimony to the congressional panel that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The Justice Department had been investigating whether Hutchinson gave false testimony to Congress. Hutchinson has maintained that her testimony was truthful.

A prosecutor told a judge in court that the grand jury rejected an indictment, without naming the defendant in court, according to Reuters.

Hutchinson, a former aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, became one of the most prominent witnesses in the Jan. 6 inquiry. Her televised testimony in June 2022 put her account of events inside the White House on the day of the attack at the center of the investigation.

Parts of that testimony were disputed by allies of former President Donald Trump, while Hutchinson stood by her account. The grand jury decision closes the charging question that had hung over her since the investigation opened.

The refusal means Hutchinson will not face charges from this grand jury presentation. Grand juries return indictments only when prosecutors persuade a majority that there is probable cause to charge; a refusal, often called a no bill, ends that particular effort.

For now, the case that had shadowed one of the Jan. 6 inquiry’s best-known witnesses has ended at the grand jury stage.
